📢 USA Import Tariff - Critical Guide

What Is this?

We’ve created this FAQ to help our U.S. customers avoid being incorrectly charged by customs. Tariffs can be confusing, but by checking HS codes and invoices carefully, you can protect yourself and ensure you only pay what’s fair.

What are U.S. import tariffs?

Tariffs are taxes applied by U.S. Customs on imported goods. They are determined using the product’s HS Code (Harmonized System code) and its country of origin.

What are HS codes?

HS codes classify products for customs. For PRP customers, key codes relate to car parts, and predominantly made from aluminum in Australia using RAW billet supplied from EU or NZ  — these can impact duty rates if misapplied.

I received an invoice from U.S. Customs — how do I check it’s accurate?

  • Request a copy of the commercial invoice PRP supplied. We supply this digitally to DHL/Fedex when lodging your shipment.
  • Compare the HS codes and pricing on PRP’s invoice with the customs invoice.
  • Question anything that doesn’t match or looks incorrect with the customs clearance agent.

Do I need to pay Tariffs on all imports?

Unfortunately for a US person/company, the answer is yes. There are only a few exceptions and almost all of our products have tariffs being applicable. As a note, the <$800 import tariff waiver is now gone and you will pay import tax on all products no matter the country or price.

Can I send you labels so I can reduce my import taxes?

No. As the shipper, PRP is responsible for accurately declaring the value of all goods, and we cannot alter invoices or labels. We work with our shipping partners to offer some of the most competitive rates available and we cannot afford to be blacklisted for all our clients because of your request.

Why is my tariff so high?

Check if you were incorrectly charged with “Made in China” tariffs — PRP rarely sells Chinese-made products. Ensure customs hasn’t defaulted to a steel HS code, which carries much higher duties.

What if I’ve already paid, but discover a mistake?

You can demand a refund for the difference by providing clear evidence (our invoice vs. the customs charges) to the DHL or Fedex clearance agent. PRP is unable do this for you.
